Elsa Jayne

Run Coyote
Run Coyote released its debut album Youth Haunts in October of 2014 on vinyl LP, CD, and digital download. With Youth Haunts, Run Coyote mixes elements of twangy indie rock, alt-country, and blues to create what LondonFuse calls “an ode to the Canadian landscape.” Quick Before it Melts said Youth Haunts is a “fine debut,” stating that the musicians “imbue intensity and passion in their playing to warm the coldest heart.” CBC Radio’s In the Key of C named the album a top pick of the week in Ontario. Neal McDonald wrote in the Waterloo Region Record that, “Youth Haunts is a showcase for Run Coyote’s rock and country roots, and captures the push and pull between urban and rural influences in the band’s music.”

9pm, JoJo Worthington
A soft tour-de-force, her vocalizations, ingenuity with looping techniques, and completely refreshing take on the often blasé instrument, the ukulele, is pushing this Experimental-Folk musician to create some of the most forward-thinking music of her generation. JoJo Worthington is a Canadian artist hailing from Waterloo, Ontario, creating soundscapes wherever she goes. With haunting choral loops, orchestral ukulele riffs, and striking spacey vocals, JoJo draws the onlookers in, slowly and with complete control. With a nod to influences of the present, St. Vincent, Grimes, Alt-J, S. Carey, and others, she finds a beautiful, swelling sound completely her own; a rare find in a sea of ukulele-based music.

*Kultrún (cool-troon). For the Mapuche people of Chile a Kultrún is not simply a drum, it is also the heartbeat of life embodied in the sound and rhythm of a drum.
Isabel Cisterna Pino and special guests from the band Picadillo - Rey Rodriguez Gay and Hector Aguero Lauten!
Picadillo’s combination of blues, ragtime, soul, son and rumba has been described as a cultural crossroads between New Orleans and Havana. Sol Ruiz and Rey Rodriguez’s rich and soulful voices make Picadillo's songs an immersive experience each one seizing its own savvy, romantic or felicitous ambitions and driven by unfailing horns and percussion. From rough and tumble ragtime songs like “Mango Tree” to their finely tuned Cuban traditional son in “Son las Cosas de la Vida,”
Picadillo breaths a fresh spirit into some much loved sounds. The bands lead singers, Sol and Rey, personify Picadillo's unique sound. Rey was raised and studied music in Cuba. Sol, on the other hand, was born in Miami to Cuban parents but has also lived in New Orleans and absorbed the sounds of the Mississippi Delta. Sol's two great loves are southern blues, jazz and rock, and Cuban guaracha and guaguanco music.
Here is my little chat with Isobel, Rey and Hector members of Picadillo who joined me in The Afternoon's Drive Passenger's Seat for a live performance! Vrooom! Vrooom!

Scott Merritt returns to the performance spotlight with Aural Gem "Of"

"I have always been taken by things out of focus and also very small things that happen over large periods of time and the contrast.” - Scott Merritt
Scott Merritt has come back once again with an aural gem simply entitled “Of”... featuring Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies) on upright bass, octave mandolin, and psaltery (a small stringed instrument (zither) played with a bow), and musician / producer Andy Magoffin (By Divine Right, Pistol George Warren) on baritone horn. Scott and I chatted about the creative process behind “Of” and his time away from the performance spotlight since the 2002 release of critically acclaimed release “The Detour Home.”
Scott is also a talented producer and has worked with many fine musicians/ friends including Fred Eaglesmith, Garnet Rogers, Stephen Fearing and Kevin Breit.
Scott and Coral's Playlist – “Meteor”, “Repo” – Scott Merritt – “Of”; (Scott's pick) Chad Van Gaalen - “Willow Tree”; “Indispensable” - Scott Merritt - “Of,” (Scott's pick); Sandro Perri - “Impossible Spaces,” ;

Charles Dickens Writes A Christmas Carol - Lost and Found Theatre

In 1843 (a time when the celebration of Christmas was considered out of fashion in the city of London, England) A Christmas Carol became one of the most popular books of the English language and has been credited by some as “almost single-handedly reviving the Christmas holiday.” In this stage adaptation of one of the most popular books of the English language, we witness the struggles and obstacles faced by Charles Dickens in his writing of this classic novel. Using only the power of his imagination, and the inspiration gleaned from a small choir of wandering carollers, we watch not only the story of the book unfold but find out why a Christmas Ghost-story was written in the first place.
Featuring live carollers, state of the art projections by Rob Ring and an amazing cast of 19, this promises to be a seasonal favourite for years to come!
THE COMPANY
Cast: Gareth Potter, Vince Carlin, Ted Follows, Christy Ziss, Kathleen Sheehy, Hannah Ziss, Brad Cook, Reid Spencer, Dylan Thomson, Parker Merlihan, Kate Camilleri, Kathryn Marchment, Richard Marchment, John Bigelow, Paige Corriveau, Bill Gastmeier, Richard Brubacher, Alten Wilmot, Aiden Schaefer.
I interviewed Hannah Ziss who plays multiple roles in this lovely re-telling of old Christmas classic – which has become a holiday tradition for families from one generation to the next. This beautifully acted production is very cleverly written by Richard Quesnel who also directed the show. And the cast is sublime – from acclaimed Stratford actor Gareth Potter, to veterans Ted Follows, Vince Garlin, Kathleen Sheehy, Christy Ziss, and Reid Spencer.

For those who love Charles Dicken's classic Yuletide story, this show is a must see. There are two nights left. It really does put you in the Christmas spirit !- **The Christmas Coral**

One Act - Rage Against Violence - Playwrights Dwight Storring and Gary Kirkham

This is probably one of the most important podcasts I have ever done.
November is Woman Abuse Awareness Month and on Monday Nov 30 Playwrights Dwight Storring and Gary Kirkham in conjunction with Women's Crisis Services of Waterloo Region present “One Act – Rage Against Violence” in a theatrical performance featuring local leaders and artists.
Here is my conversation with Dwight and Gary and their process behind putting this collection of real-life stories of abuse together for what will be a very powerful night.
To the women that have survived abuse, I salute your courage. To the men who support them and realize how serious this issue is, thank you.
This will be a life-changing night. For someone in the audience who may have been silenced because of abuse, after seeing this performance, may it give you the bravery to finally speak out.

Grand River Blues Camp - The Blues Youth Jam at Bobby O'Briens every Sunday from 4 to 7 pm

The Grand River Bluescamp is currently running Blues Youth Jam at Bobby O'Briens in downtown Kitchener every Sunday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. Come down and watch these kids jam it out with some of the best players / music teachers in Waterloo Region.
I went and hung out with the kids and the teachers in the summer. They did a fabulous job at Kitchener Blues Festival on The BIA stage playing to a packed house.
Here is what a Day in the Life is like at Grand River Blues Camp.
After four days of intensive music rehearsals (like Boot Camp!) with Grand River Blues Camp instructors, (see the amazing line up in Bluescamp story below!) Blues Campers are getting for the BIG GIG @ The Kitchener Bluesfest BIA Stage Friday Aug 7 between 2:10 and 4:10 pm. I visited Bluescamp Central at Courtland Avenue School in Kitchener where I found 45 kids working on their specially chosen music set lists from 1945 blues classic "Caledonia" to Joe Cocker cover fave " She Came in Through the Bathroom Window." I spoke to Adam Blackburn, a third-year student who comes up to Bluescamp from Louisiana, USA, every year. I also sat in on a special class with (formerly Kitchener based) blues-hero Juno Award Winner Steve Strongman, who told the kids what being a musician is really all about. This was a lot of fun! I can hardly wait to see this talented bunch of students perform for what I am sure will be a capacity crowd at The BIA Stage. See ya there! Yowser!- Coral FM.

A Shiver Factor moment! Other members / camp instructors in the band - Chris Latta, guitar, John Lee, guitar, Andy Gingerich, drums and Matt Weidinger, keys.
The Grand River Blues Camp - 2015!
"This show is remarkable and it really is what kicks off the Bluesfest. Families are there. People who getting started at the Festival are there. And it is a packed house. What a great experience it is to witness this." - Claude Cloutier, Artistic Director,TD Kitchener Blues Festvial.
The Grand River Blues Society has adopted a mandate to educate young people about the blues. Since 2008 they have run this annual Grand River Blues Camp, a day-camp experience for young musicians from 12-18 years of age. For many years now, Blues Campers have benefited from instruction by and performance experience with local, working blues musicians. This is a unique learning experience for young musicians and a mentoring opportunity (providing additional revenue) for local blues musicians.
The Eighth Annual Grand River Blues Camp is planned for the summer of 2015, from August 4 to August 7; the week leading up to the Kitchener Blues Festival. The 2015 Camp will be held at Courtland Public School, Kitchener, ON.
Young musicians who play guitar, drums, bass, vocals, keyboards, horns or harmonica will find this a wonderful opportunity to learn about blues and meet other young musicians. Grand River Blues Camp will be of particular interest to young musicians who want to perform. During this exciting week campers will learn learn licks, a full set of blues tunes, how to jam and perform on stage.
The most exciting feature of Grand River Blues Camp is the Grand River Blues Camp Showcase. This will be a culminating performance by our Blues Campers on Friday afternoon, August 7, between 2:15 pm and 4:15 pm on BIA stage (downtown Kitchener at King and Benton Streets) at the 2015 Kitchener Blues Festival – an amazing opportunity to participate in the Festival and to perform for friends and family.
There is nothing I like doing more than writing about promising new musicians. It was KBF Mel Brown Award Recipient Cheryl Lescom who first spoke to me about this amazing concept several years ago. I remember seeing the Blues Camp show last year at the BIA stage with a capacity audience – one of my fave parts of this three day event.
It was my great pleasure to have both the students and several of the instructors from The Grand River Blues Camp (now in its eighth year) as my very special guests. Students Alexis Boudreau, Joshua David, and Braydon Kains performed several songs live in the Sound FM studios.
They were joined by Grand River Blues Camp instructors (all locally based working professional blues musicians) Cheryl Lescom, Mike McDonald, Alana Leonard, (2015 head instructor) Don Featherstone, plus Grand River Blues Camp co-director Dennis Cuomo.
Other teachers of the Blues Camp include John Lee, Chris Latta, Colin White, (former student) Matt Weidinger (former student), John McKinley, David Rodenburg, and Andy Gingerich, plus organizer Janet McKerron Wendell and Blues Camp co-director George White.
The Grand River Blues Camp show is Friday Aug 7 between 2:10 and 4:10 pm at The BIA Stage at King and Benton streets.

ActONE Play Festival - Three Plays for Thought

JM Drama Presents:
ACTOne Play Festival
June 4 - 6, 2015
The ACTOne Play Festival features three one-act plays by local writers:
Third Person - by Brandon Wicke
Gwen and Brianne and friends who look out for one another. While trekking through the outdoors, they encounter a mysterious and omnipotent force which causes them to re-examine how they perceive themselves, each other and the great beyond.
Life in a Leaf - by Graham Ducker
At the end of the summer, a boy and his grandfather have a conversation about their respective futures.
Revelations - by Steve Seguin
It’s raining. A young woman watches the TV news while waiting for her boyfriend to come home.
In Steve Seguin’s play ”Revelations”, lonely people are attracted to each other onto a ship that is sinking. Two people stuck in bad relationships – Rebecca with an abusive boyfriend, Dave with a neglectful God – are brought together. These kindred spirits desperately need help – or simply someone whom they can talk to. Everyone is waiting for the ultimate revelation that will hopefully answer all questions. Witty, sarcastic, or dark, the dialogs and situations reveal the ordinary monster that is hidden under everyone’s bed.
Tickets are $15, $10 for students/seniors, $5 eyeGO. Doors at 7 pm, shows start at 7:30 pm.
Plus!
Staged Readings of “Hello Meisje Cat Are You A Good Doggy” by Ben Steele and “The Interview” by Bernadette McClenaghan at 2 pm on Saturday June 6!
Mature content advisory, some plays contain coarse language and mature subject matter. Viewer's discretion is advised.
For more info https://www.facebook.com/events/1482368108685832/
In this podcast Suzanne and I discuss the creative process behind "Revelations" and also her work in the theatre as both an actor and director since she arrived in KW last September. Soon she will return to Versailles, France to pursue her work in the theatre. I wish her Bon Chance!
***This is a great evening of provocative mind bending theatre. “Revelations” is the kind of play that stays with you long after the lights dim down ...
I highly recommend this production. First time director/actor Suzanne Gignoux, (pictured in the poster) finds many intriguing dimensions in playwright Steve Seguin's eloquent darkly comedic but very poignant piece about lost souls searching for answers that will never come easily.. Congrats to the entire cast and crew. Tonight is the final night. Take the time to go and see it. - Coral **

Hawkeyes - Tune Down, Turn Up. Six Mighty Musicmen having Big Fun.
Hawkeyes are ....
Patrick Finch - Guitars
Ron Cybulskie - Guitars
Ryan Allen - Guitars
Chris Gardner - Guitars
Rob Keith - Bass
Stacey Schmitt - Drums/Cymbals
Their self-described “chaotic, psychedelic brand of space-doom” is a pretty accurate description of Hawkeyes’ sound… a heavy, dark, and monolithic ambience is set by their rhythym section and Hawkeyes’ four guitarists play very interestingly off of it, mounting texture upon texture, weaving a multitude of tones around that monolithic base.
“Tune down, turn up.
The band was recently signed to Nashville label Helmet Lady Records who are re-releasing “Poison Slows Your Down” on limited edition coloured vinyl with custom-design artwork. Hawkeyes “March of the Elephants” was also on Saskatoon's Pre-Rock Records 2014 heavy psyche-rock CD compilation “House of Burners.” Toontown's Shooting Guns, (recent Juno nominees and champions of Hawkeyes) are also doing a 12-inch split vinyl release to be released in Canada by Pre-Rock and worldwide by Helmet Lady. “Brothers of the Nod” features three A-sides by Shooting Guns and three B-sides by Hawkeyes including slow scorch video-to-be psycho-space monster-doom tune “Hotter Than Ten Hundred Suns” “Orange Monkey” (Hotter Reprise), and ultimate M.A.S.H homage “The Charred Skull of McLean Stevenson.”
Drummer Stacey Schmitt aka SS was my special guest on Coral FM. Here is what he had to say about all things Hawkeyes and being the flagship band to be signed to Helmet Lady Records out of Nashville. Music in this podcast - Saskatoon pals Shooting Guns and Hawkeyes trax from "Poison Slows You Down" and also "Brothers of the Nod"

Podcast Three - Flush Ink's Founder Paddy Gillard-Bentley and Playwright Terre Chartland
chat about UnHinged - Festival of Disturbing Theatre.

Unhinged - Festival of Disturbing Theatre - Part 2
Last week several brave playwrights - some for their first time!!!- were sent to disturbing locations to come up with approx. 10-minute scripts. The plays have been cast - the directors chosen, and now the time has come to put these productions up on their feet!
Complimenting the UnHinged Plays Collection - Paddy Gillard-Bentley's "A Rose Upon the Blood"
set in 1916 and also in 1923 at Kilmainham Gaol, during the Easter Rising aka Éirí Amach na Cásca.
Founded in 1796 as Dublin's 'New Gaol', Kilmainham operated as a prison until 1924. During its history, the gaol contained not only ordinary criminals including women and children, but also political prisoners. During the famine, some people committed crimes in order to be admitted into the prison, where they were at least guaranteed a basic diet. The Gaol was so crowded in those years that prisoners slept in the corridors.
"A Rose Upon the Blood" is the tragic story of Grace Gifford & Joseph Plunkett
Written & Directed by Paddy Gillard-Bentley. Performed by Julia Krauss, Kathleen Sheehy
Bruce Wolff & Zach Parsons.
The UnHinged Schedule. All productions are staged at KWLT's intimate
Black Box Theatre.
FRIDAY and SATURDAY EVENINGS @ 8 pm (April 3 & 4)
A Rose Upon the Blood - $12 ($10 with a COPA Card)
The three short UnHinged plays - $9 ($6 with a COPA Card)
NightPass - All three plays - $18 ($15 with a COPA Card)
SATURDAY APRIL 4 - Afternoon @ 2 pm
Write or Flight RESPONSE - $12 ($10 with a COPA Card)
FestPass - $20 ($18 with COPA Card)
Any play, any time, as many times as you desire.
Next UnHinged - November 2016
For more info http://www.flushink.net/
Paddy and Terre came to visit me to chat about UnHinged which is also nominated for a Waterloo Region Arts Award this year!
Paddy, of course, delights in sending her playwrights to very psychologically disturbing locations where they have to create and hone plays on demand.
It's Terre's third year at UnHinged and she speaks about her recent "disturbing" experience. It's always a pleasure to chat with these two

SATURDAY APRIL 4 - Afternoon @ 2 pm
Write or Flight RESPONSE - $12 ($10 with a COPA Card)

Paddy and Terre came to visit me to chat about UnHinged which is also nominated for a Waterloo Region Arts Award this year!
Paddy, of course, delights in sending her playwrights to very psychologically disturbing locations where they have to create and hone plays on demand.
It's Terre's third year at UnHinged and she speaks about her recent "disturbing" experience. It's always a pleasure to chat with these two
arts and cultcha innovators. To the Flush Ink playwrights, actors, and directors congrats for surviving through yet another UnHinged

Podcast Two - Popular Minority's "How to Write a Song" (A Musical)
debuts at The Registry Theatre

Longtime concert promoter and event organizer, Brad Marshall has teamed up with local short story writer and poet, Leanne Hohl to create, “How to Write a Song”, their debut musical which is playing one night only at the Registry Theatre on Saturday April 4, 2015.
In the tradition of great Hollywood rock and roll romances from “Sid and Nancy” to the more recent 2014 hit “Begin Again” (which coincidentally was inspired by a musical film), How to Write a Song is the classic Rock and Roll romance, with a local twist. It is a story that weaves inspiration, aspiration, love and a passion for music.
The story outlines the character of a local Kitchener musician and recent Waterloo graduate Jack Dolph, burdened with debt and living life, gig to gig. Fairly well known locally and just a bit reclusive, Jack seizes the opportunity to get out of his rut when the city of Kitchener offers a $100,000 cash prize as part of a songwriting contest to create a theme song for the city to use locally and internationally to showcase the city’s industry and tourism.
Struggling to craft the perfect song, Jack comes across Zara, daughter of Jamaican immigrants who run a successful Caribbean restaurant. Jack is a free-spirited liberal, while Zara, a more conservative business graduate with staunch religious beliefs. Upon a chance meeting, sparks fly, a song is written and an inevitable clash of culture ensues.
The cast of “How to Write a Song” is comprised of a small group of local and mainly established musicians and actors. The role of Jack is performed by Jason Walsh, (Christen Zook, Jen Militia, Almost Hip) musician who has toured across North America with several bands; while the role of Zara is performed by Jasmine David, an acting student making her debut and discovered by the musical’s producer, Brad Marshall.
The musical is set for one night only, Saturday April 4, 2015 at the Registry Theatre. Limited Tickets are $25.00 and can be purchased at: Box Office, Centre In The Square, 101 Queen Street North in Kitchener. (519) 578-1570

Podcast One - Songwriter Circle's Musicians Lynn Jackson and Jesse Parent Visit Coral FM

Jesse Parent has honed his craft with local shows and travelling throughout Ontario - from the small towns of Southwestern Ontario, to larger cities of London, Toronto and Ottawa. And what drives Parent for all those hours behind the wheel?
“I like the sense of being with people of like minds - a kind of understanding. A connection through the music.”
“I know when I go see a show, I like to see people who are really passionate about what they do,” he says, adding that well-crafted songs are vital.
"All the shows. All the miles. All the sweat and the songs." (bio by Lynn Jackson) http://www.jesseparentmusic.com/
For Lynn Jackson, it is all about the songs. Ten years and six albums into her recording career, the one constant fans have come to expect is top notch songwriting and that voice. “When I write a song, I often hear the arrangement fully formed – I let the songs lead me into whatever direction they want to go. I guess I'm considered a folk-roots artist, but if my writing and ideas take me outside the genre, I'm not afraid to stretch out creatively. There are no rules when it comes to songwriting." http://lynnjackson.net
Tanya Philipovich's music has been lovingly described as “Freak Folk”. Her songs are poetically driven, melodically interesting and generally performed with solo voice and guitar; simplicity is the best way to exhibit her complex and intriguing songwriting. Tanya released her second album, Secret Fiction Romance,
in 2009, on Doin’ Time Records. Secret Fiction Romance was recorded and produced by guitar-man Dan Walsh (Fred Eaglesmith, Willie P. Bennett, Corb Lund) at his Cozy Little Shack On Lake Erie Studio. http://www.tanyarock.com/
Coming together in November of 2009, The Stoney Lonesome boys share a love of honest country music. Based on the carefully crafted songs of Steve Parkinson, the Lonesome boys build arrangements that are reminiscent of old-time honky-tonks and the classic stylings of Parsons, Nelson and The Possum. Their sound is a product of immense thievery; stealing from Nashville, Bakersfield, western swing, folk, and rock and roll.

This Good Friday April 3 at The KW Boathouse - Musical friends Jesse Parent, Lynn Jackson, Steve Parkinson, and Tanya Philipovich will be sharing the stage, playing tunes, and telling stories. More info at https://www.facebook.com/events/455505821270425/
It's always so much fun when Jesse and Lynn come to visit. Jesse and Lynn sing harmony for Jesse's new single "Let It Go" and Lynn premiered new song "Young" from one of her upcoming albums. Lynn and Jesse are both part of the CBC Searchlight Contest. Find 'em on Facebook and VOTE! - Coral FM.

UW Drama's Rhinoceros directed by Martha Ross of Theatre Columbus

Eugene Ionesco’s most renowned play Rhinoceros, was written in 1959 in response to the resurfacing of fascism in parts of Europe. But more importantly, Ionesco wrote it as an attack on something that troubled him greatly: social conformity. He had witnessed this strange malady in people regardless of their social class or political beliefs. This play is on one level very simple: The inhabitants of a French town in the 1950’s one by one turn into a rhinoceros until they all become a mindless and savage herd. All of them that is except for the ‘Everyman’ character of Berenger. It is Berenger with whom we identify the most as he drifts through life without purpose, comically passive, bored and self-obsessed. But by the end of the play Berenger, in his success at resisting ‘rhinoceritus’, is the character that has changed the most. He becomes a revolutionary, a tragic figure that urgently calls out to his fellow townspeople to resist the insanity. They sadly no longer have the ears to hear him.
Guest director, Martha Ross from Theatre Columbus, will examine this intricate dance between comedy and tragedy, beauty and horror, with the accomplished student cast and the assistance of Colin Labadie’scomically frightening soundscape, Paul Cegys’ exquisite dream-like set,Sharon E. Secord’s colourful and splendid costumes and Arun Srinivasan’s masterful lighting.
Rhinoceros speaks to us as much now as it did 50 years ago. We’re currently witnessing around the world an alarming resurgence of neo-nazism. But the play as well speaks to our propensity for denial. Like the characters in Ionesco’s play we are blind to what is glaring right at us. We adapt to anything because it’s easier to conform than to challenge the status quo.
Rhinoceros continues at University of Waterloo's Theatre of the Arts Friday March 20, and Saturday March 21.

Martha Ross co-founded Theatre Columbus with Leah Cherniak after she graduated from École Jacques Lecoq in Paris. Continuing in the spirit of their training, their company has created twenty-eight original comedies, including the world renowned The Anger in Ernest & Ernestine (1987);The Attic, the Pearls and Three Fine Girls (1995), for which Martha received a Dora Mavor Moore Award for her performance; and The Betrayal, which received a 1999 Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award for Best New Play. In 2007, Martha performed in the Canadian Stage Company’s touring production of The Overcoat. As well as performing, Martha has written several plays including Dr. Dapertutto (nominated for the Floyd S. Chalmers Canadian Play Award in 1990); Ratbag, a musical about the Industrial Revolution that she wrote with her composer husband, John Millard; and The Dog and the Angel for the Caravan Farm Theatre Co. (1999). Martha also teaches Shakespeare to children and young teens. One of the high points of her career was creating and performing the character of Ernestine.

Safe as Houses - Fall of a Sparrow radio premiere with Elliot Anton and Thomas Laughton

I am so proud of this band, and even more chuffed that I was the first person who ever interviewed them on the radio.
That said, I would like to say a very special thank you to Craig Norris of CBC KW for his support of Safe As Houses since their debut album Sink My Boat. These young musicians have clearly captured the hearts and ears of many in Waterloo Region.
Now 2 years later, Safe As Houses has released their second album ... "fall of a sprrrow"... and for me .. well ...it reminds me of the first time I listened to Simon and Garfunkel's 1966 folk classic "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme". There are songs on .. "fall of a sparrow"... that just send chills through me especially "Leaves I've Thrown" "The Sun and The Storm" and especially "I'm a Fire" ....
The Safe as Houses foundation is built from Tom Laughton, on drums/ percussion, Andrew Laughton, lead guitar/banjo/mandolin and vocals, Eliott Anton, lead vocals/rhythm guitar, and Bensen Carter on bass/cello/ukelele.
And special guests on this new album include trumpet virtuoso Larry Larson, and newest SAH member Lauren Taylor on violin/viola.
The four part harmony of the band melded with the instrumentation is flawless under the superlative guidance of producer Sam Hillifer and music mastering veteran J.Richard Hutt of Cedartree Recording Studios. Eliott and Thomas dropped by the Sound FM studios to premiere this album in support of their show with The Royal Streets at Maxwell's Music House this Friday Dec 5. I am not surprised at all that this show is sold out.
The Royal Streets is another band that has soared to incredible heights in such a short time. And I think Craig Norris for introducing me to their music! Re upcoming Safe as Houses shows - no worries .. they are likely playing Cafe Pyrus in February 2015.
As I continue to say ... this is just the beginning for one of the most talented bands to come out of Kitchener Waterloo. I can see them playing many a festival, including Hillside and maybe one day Mariposa. It is just a matter of time... - Coral FM

Idea Exchange & Michael Gabriel - Choral Creation in Motion
Idea Exchange (formerly the Cambridge libraries) is a very successful Art + Design initiative which has flourished in the city of Cambridge.
Tamara Neill, of Idea Exchange speaks about how this innovative re-branding has fosters relationships with other arts organizations in Waterloo Region, and beyond, in cultural activities for all ages, including visual arts, film, and music.
LA based singer/songwriter Michael Gabriel is a great example of Idea Exchange's mandate.
He contacted the Cambridge organization from his home base in LA regarding his traveling orchestral series “Strings Attached.”
Thanks to Idea Exchange who provided the facilities, (and also hosted these events) Michael was able to conduct a youth song writing workshop, and “Strings Attached” preview concert with cellist Trina Nadeau.
He also worked with St. Benedict's High School choral ensemble and adult choir The Hoot.
Friday October 17 Michael Gabriel's “Strings Attached” will be performed at Cambridge Arts Centre featuring these two choirs, and his mini-orchestra which includes core members Trina Nadeau, cello, and Sandy Ludwig, piano, in addition to Karen Spithoff, violin, and newest member Joy Schuster on viola.
For this concert partial proceeds will go to Cambridge Shelter Corporation -

Eric Charles - Always In for the Ride

Eric Charles is a Canadian Singer/Songwriter and former front man for successful indie band, the Road Poets: a hardworking roots rock act with a devoted following. This seasoned and passionate live performer has stayed true to his indie pop rocker pedigree with his new full length solo studio album, Another Trip. Studded with catchy melodies, ear pleasing rock n’ rock hooks and artful lyrics that repay a close listen.
Charles credits some of the following musical influences: Neil Young, Cold Play, The Killers, Radiohead, The Tragically Hip, Son Volt, Oasis, Sloan, Gin Blossoms, City & Colour, Jim Cuddy, Death Cab for Cutie, 55-40, The Rolling Stones, Nirvana, U2, The Jayhawks, REM, Crosby, Stills & Nash and America.
The Eric Charles Band was recently chosen to compete at Kitchener's Big Music Fest and over the summer Eric and his band's guitarist / vocalist Nick Maldonado went on a Radio Station Road Trip throughout parts of Ontario and Quebec in support of Another Trip remix - In for The Ride.
The single was produced by Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Big Sugar, Tragically Hip and Sarah Harmer to name a few!) Gavin Brown recently received the prestigious Jack Richardson Producer of the Year Award.
So Eric and the band were super excited to go down to Toronto's Noble Studios to work with Brown on the In for the Ride rock remix. And the radio stations have embraced In for the Ride, which is now receiving mainstream airplay.
As the last stop of his radio station tour, Eric Charles returned to Sound FM as my very special guest.
We had a wide ranging chat from the first time he picked up a guitar, to Eric's latest big news.
The band just finished playing a highly successful concert at Kitchener's Eidelweiss Tavern, with musical guests Jessie Treneer, and Henry Taylor.
And now The Eric Charles Band has been invited to perform at Toronto's legendary live concert venue The Horseshoe Tavern this Tuesday night Sept 30!
For more on Eric go to http://eric-charles.com/ and here is the link to the piece I wrote for Waterloo Region Record's Nightlife.

Weekend Wars - BFFS in Crime and Misdemeanours

RYAN LEACOCK
A digital media artist, writer and experienced graphic designer, his work has been dominating all facets of digital arts, from media to the sign industry.
“I believe that good design goes over and above the way something looks. It’s the way it feels; the way it’s supposed to feel,” Ryan explains. “Crafting the look of a company, or a project gives it the intangible; it reveals the soul.”
Ryan’s proficiency, professionalism and personal touch to his work has turned him into a reputable force to be reckoned with. His recent return to Waterloo Region has sparked his desire to further challenge himself by becoming an entrepreneur and opening the doors to his first self-owned endeavor; Black Mirror Creative.
“I like bold designs that feel personal or classic. I love all sorts of films, retro design, graphic novels, and pinup girls,” Ryan admits, adding, “I love the feeling of vinyl records, I like how big the album artwork is. I have a bunch of big old monster movie posters in my office. I like design that is tangible.”
Ryan has also bridged his creative designs into a cinemagraphic novel series, The Weekend Wars. Having currently released its first two volumes, Ryan has developed his flair for design with his sleek approach to writing. The Weekend Wars has garnished itself the future of comic books as it is featured in an application for Apple designed by Ryan himself.
For More info on Ryan Leacock go The Weekend Wars and Black Mirror Creative!
And check out The Weekend Wars Happening at Imbibe Food/Drink tonight!
Ryan will be there to answer your questions about this his innovative cinemagraphic novel. Ryan like me (because I work at Far Out Flicks) is also a film geek so we discussed our fave films. We both have particular fondness for directtor Wes Anderson. I had little fun with some modern classic film clips from one of Ryan's fave flicks. Here's to the Mixed Tape, Ryan! - Coral FM.

C.J. Allen of Circus Music Co-Hosts Coral FM - Zombies and Board Games Galore!

Music producer and talent scout C.J. Allen has launched Circus Music Company (CMC), a music management agency that will work with local artists in the Waterloo Region to develop the artist’s skill and understanding of the industry.
With seven years experience working with singer-songwriters, bands and performers in Seoul, South Korea, Allen, who also served as a judge for Korea’s first all-English talent competition – Top Talent, plans to sign and manage KW singers and musicians while helping them to develop their brand, marketing and digital media campaigns.
“Artists in the Waterloo Region are severely under-represented. They’re an ambitious, creative, talented community that we want to be involved with them; we want to make an awesome impact and get the music community the exposure it needs and deserves. KW isn’t just a tech community, there’s a vibrant [music] scene here,” says Allen.
Circus Music Company has begun actively scouting talent and is accepting unsolicited demo material from artists seeking management and marketing services. CMC is also offering consultations for artists who may not be ready for full-time management. For more information, please contact talent@circus-music.com.
It was fun having C.J. as a guest co host because he has a morbid fear of Zombies!
C.J. and I spoke about his new company Circus Music. And then we also spoke with Trevor Smith Diggins, Jennifer Cornish and Lisa MacNeil from Dine Her which plays at Harmony Lunch to July 12. See My Podcast Below.

DINE HER - A Guy... A Girl... An Uprising!
Since it opened way back in 1930, the legendary Harmony Lunch restaurant in Waterloo has survived the Great Depression, a global war and a growing fast-food chain frenzy. This summer, the iconic eatery takes on show business for ten performances of DINE HER, a romantic comedy with a meal and a zombie apocalypse on the side.
Written and directed by veteran Second City comedian Bruce Hunter, DINE HER offers a frighteningly funny twist on the traditional dinner theatre concept. The 60-minute show premiered last year in Toronto earning rave reviews from critics and audience alike.
"Diner theatre is similar to dinner theatre, only it's faster, cheaper and you still get a belly full of
laughs," says Hunter, who performed in the original show. "It’s more like casual, comfort food, up close and personal in a cozy old diner, and then the show starts and all hell breaks loose."
Winner of two Gemini awards and two Canadian Comedy Awards, Hunter has been featured in dozens of TV shows and films, including Atomic Betty, Kid's CBC, Degrassi, Good Will Hunting, Mean Girls and Puppets Who Kill. Hunter’s company, RealSpace Theatre, expands the performance space beyond the stage to explore how audiences and performers interact with their environment to create a unique theatre experience.
DINE HER was written specifically for diners just like Harmony Lunch. "Not only is it a local landmark with a long, rich history," says Hunter, "it also offers the perfect setting for this particular style of in-your‐lap comedy."
DINE HER is co-produced in Waterloo with PrACTical TheACTrics and stars prominent local actors Jennifer Cornish, Trevor Smith Diggins, and Lisa MacNeil. The show includes a themed menu with three meal options for $34.95.
Dinner at 7:00 pm. Showtime 8:00 pm. Tickets available online at eventbrite.ca.
Visit facebook.com/dineher or phone 519-804-2133 for information and group sales.
Recommended for mature audiences.
